NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reported on Thursday that the Toronto Maple Leafs are parting ways with long-time Executive and Assistant GM, Laurence Gilman, this summer.
Gilman, who is 59 years old, has been associated with the Leafs organization for the past six years. His contract with the Maple Leafs is set to expire in a month, and both parties have amicably agreed to go their separate ways.
In 2018, Gilman joined the Maple Leafs as the Assistant GM under Kyle Dubas, concurrently taking on the role of General Manager for the Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. He fulfilled this dual responsibility until 2021 when the Leafs brought in Ryan Hardy, a two-time USHL GM of the year winner, and former Chicago Steel GM, to take over the Marlies. Following this transition, Gilman assumed the position of Senior Vice President of hockey operations for the Marlies, where he has remained for the past few seasons.
Gilman’s extensive career in hockey spans over 25 years, during which he held various positions within the Winnipeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes and the Vancouver Canucks organizations. Notably, he served as an assistant-GM under Mike Gillis with the Canucks, contributing to the team’s journey to the 2011 Stanley Cup finals. Additionally, Gilman worked for the NHL from 2016 to 2018, playing a pivotal role in formulating the rules for the expansion draft of the Vegas Golden Knights.
The future destination of Gilman remains uncertain, although his wealth of knowledge and experience in the hockey realm suggests that he will have numerous opportunities available to him. Given his track record, it’s likely he’ll seamlessly transition into a new role within the industry should he choose to do so.
Gilman’s departure marks the fourth significant change within the off-ice personnel of the Toronto Maple Leafs this summer. Firstly, Head Coach Sheldon Keefe was relieved of his duties on May 9th and replaced by Craig Berube. Subsequently, two of Keefe’s assistant coaches, Dean Chynoweth and Manny Malhotra, also departed from the organization.
To fill these vacancies, the Leafs have appointed Lane Lambert, the former head coach of the New York Islanders, while Keefe’s remaining assistants, Guy Boucher and Mike Van Ryn, are expected to continue in their roles, albeit with potential adjustments, particularly regarding Boucher’s responsibilities concerning the power-play unit.
