Report: Sheffield Wednesday star rejects final contract offer, he’ll now leave as a free agent

A key player from Sheffield Wednesday, Josh Windass, is set to depart as a free agent after rejecting the club’s final contract offer, according to a report from Football Insider. This follows the recent exit of Will Vaulks, who has signed with Championship rivals Oxford United after two seasons with Sheffield Wednesday, during which he was named the club’s Player of the Season for 2023/24.

Windass, who played a crucial role in the team’s survival in the Championship by scoring six goals last season, is now leaving alongside other departing players like Lee Gregory, Reece James, and George Byers, who also became a free agent. Goalkeeper Cameron Dawson is anticipated to leave in search of first-team opportunities, despite being offered a new deal by the club.

There are also uncertainties surrounding the future of Di’Shon Bernard, whose contract is up this summer. Despite being offered new terms following his impressive season, Bernard is currently occupied with international duties for Jamaica in the Copa America.

Josh Windass initially joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan in 2020, making the move permanent that same year. Over his tenure, he scored 40 goals and provided 17 assists in 135 appearances, including a memorable goal in the League One play-off final victory over Barnsley in 2023.

Windass’s departure is significant for Sheffield Wednesday, given his crucial contributions, especially during the critical moments of the past two seasons. Despite his struggles with injuries and inconsistent form, his overall impact on the team has been substantial. The club’s decision to offer him a new deal indicates that head coach Danny Rohl valued Windass’s presence and contributions.

Losing Windass is expected to be a blow for Rohl and the team, who now face the challenge of filling the void left by such an influential player. Currently, Coventry City and Hull City are leading the race to sign Windass, highlighting his continued value and potential impact at a high level in English football.
