Novak Djokovic recovery update ahead of Wimbledon as surgeon hits back at ‘unfair criticism’

Novak Djokovic is facing significant challenges in his recovery ahead of Wimbledon following recent knee surgery. The tennis star underwent an operation on his right knee to address a torn medial meniscus, an injury sustained during his fourth-round match at Roland Garros against Francisco Cerundolo. Despite requiring treatment throughout the match, Djokovic managed to secure a five-set victory but subsequently withdrew from the tournament to undergo surgery in Paris.

The initial prognosis for Djokovic’s recovery ranged from three to six weeks, leaving his participation in Wimbledon, which begins on July 1, in serious doubt. Surgeon Antoana Geromete, who performed the procedure, has stated that while rehabilitation is progressing, achieving full fitness in time for Wimbledon will be very challenging. Geromete highlighted the uncertainty of recovery timelines, explaining that the knee’s response to increased activity levels would be a critical factor. The surgeon noted that expecting Djokovic to be at 100% within three weeks post-operation seems highly improbable.

In light of these difficulties, Djokovic might consider skipping Wimbledon to prioritize his preparation for the 2024 Paris Games, which will also be held at Roland Garros. He is also planning to use the Hamburg European Open as a warm-up event for the Olympics. This strategic focus could help him ensure he is fully fit for the prestigious international competition.

Djokovic has faced criticism in the past, with some questioning the authenticity of his injuries. These doubts surfaced again after his struggle against Cerundolo. However, Geromete defended Djokovic, emphasizing the severity of his injury and praising his resilience. The surgeon pointed out that most individuals with such an injury would require immediate emergency treatment due to a ‘locked’ knee, a condition only rectifiable through surgery. Geromete’s comments aim to counter the skepticism about Djokovic’s injury, highlighting the extraordinary nature of his ability to continue playing despite the significant physical impairment.

This situation underscores the physical and mental fortitude Djokovic has demonstrated throughout his career. While his presence at Wimbledon remains uncertain, his commitment to recovery and strategic planning for future competitions reflect his enduring dedication to the sport. Fans and critics alike will be watching closely to see how Djokovic navigates this latest challenge in his illustrious career.
