When the Buffalo Bills signed Mitchell Trubisky in 2021, he was widely regarded as a top-tier backup quarterback. His tenure…Read more with the Bills served as a springboard, leading to a starting opportunity with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Over the past two seasons, Trubisky started seven games but failed to secure the starting position, with him and Kenny Pickett alternating roles. As of now, neither remains with the Steelers.
Cody Benjamin of CBSSports.com recently ranked the top ten backup quarterback situations in the NFL, but Trubisky was notably absent from the list. While some backup quarterbacks on the list are justifiable, the ranking placed JJ McCarthy of the Minnesota Vikings as the second-best backup in the league, which is contentious given that McCarthy is a rookie and has yet to play an NFL game. Ranking a rookie so highly without any professional experience is questionable.
Other positions in the ranking also raise eyebrows. For instance, Kenny Pickett in Philadelphia and Justin Fields in Pittsburgh occupy the third and fourth spots, respectively, which seems debatable. The tenth spot, held by Sam Howell of the Seattle Seahawks, also appears misplaced. Many quarterbacks on the list, such as Jimmy Garoppolo, Carson Wentz, and Andy Dalton, have substantial starting experience. Trubisky, with his considerable experience, deserves a place in this top ten, arguably between the sixth and tenth spots.
Is Mitch Trubisky a fit with the Buffalo Bills?
Trubisky is indeed a good fit for Buffalo. Though not at the elite level of Josh Allen, his skill set closely mirrors Allen’s, making him an excellent backup. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady wouldn’t need to significantly alter the offensive scheme for Trubisky. The same plays and style of game can be maintained seamlessly. Trubisky’s career statistics include over 12,000 passing yards, a completion rate of over 64%, and 72 touchdowns, with 57 career starts. His extensive experience and familiarity with running an offense make him a valuable asset, perfectly suited for the Buffalo Bills.
