An NBA trade proposal has surfaced, suggesting a potential exchange between the New York Knicks and the Memphis Grizzlies this offseason, as outlined by Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report. The proposed trade involves the Knicks sending Mitchell Robinson to the Grizzlies in exchange for Luke Kennard, the No. 9 pick in the upcoming draft, along with second-round picks in 2026 (via LAC) and 2027 (via ATL).
Robinson, who saw limited action for the Knicks this season due to a foot injury, averaged 5.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 57.5% from the field and 40.9% from the free-throw line. With a salary of $14.3 million for the next season, his future role with the team remains uncertain, especially if the Knicks prioritize retaining Isaiah Hartenstein as their starting center, as speculated by Buckley.
The potential trade could benefit the Grizzlies, who have a gap to fill in their center rotation following the departure of Steven Adams. Robinson’s proficiency on the offensive glass, evidenced by his career average of 5.4 offensive rebounds per 36 minutes and 6.7 per 36 this season, could bolster Memphis’ interior presence, particularly alongside star point guard Ja Morant.
Conversely, the Knicks, coming off a second-round playoff exit against the Indiana Pacers, could use the assets acquired in the trade to strengthen their roster. With Kennard, a skilled shooter boasting a career three-point percentage of 43.9%, they could add scoring depth and perimeter threat. Additionally, the draft picks would provide the Knicks’ front office with valuable bargaining chips for future transactions, potentially facilitating the acquisition of a star player down the line.
Kennard, known for his sharpshooting prowess, averaged 11.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists this season, with impressive shooting percentages of 44.8% overall, 45.0% from beyond the arc, and 88.9% from the foul line. His club option for the 2024-25 season presents flexibility for the Knicks’ financial planning and roster management moving forward.
In essence, the proposed trade presents a strategic opportunity for both teams to address their respective needs and enhance their competitiveness in the upcoming season. For the Knicks, it offers a chance to acquire valuable assets while potentially parting ways with a player whose future role within the team is uncertain. Conversely, the Grizzlies could benefit from adding a dynamic presence like Robinson to their lineup, complementing their existing roster and fortifying their aspirations for success in the league.
