JUST IN: Phillies Urge Fans To Pray For Veteran Catcher As He Is Set To Undergo A Surgery This Week

Phillies’ catcher J.T. Realmuto is set to undergo surgery on his right knee in Philadelphia, with the team announcing the procedure. Additionally, the three-time All-Star has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Monday, as disclosed by the team. However, no specific timeline for his return was provided. Realmuto, 33, experienced right knee soreness, leading him to miss three consecutive games from May 12th to 14th. Presently, his batting average stands at .261, accompanied by seven home runs and 20 RBIs across 51 games in the ongoing season. Notably, he had embarked on a career-high streak of hitting in 17 consecutive games earlier this season.

Throughout his career spanning 1,191 games with both the Miami Marlins (2014-2018) and the Phillies, Realmuto has maintained a career batting average of .272, amassing 161 home runs and 598 RBIs. In light of Realmuto’s absence, the Phillies have opted to recall catcher Rafael Marchan from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Marchan, aged 25, had previously appeared in the major leagues for the Phillies earlier in the season, albeit without making an appearance in any games. His performance this season includes a batting average of .233, with two home runs and eight RBIs across 13 games split between Class A Clearwater and Lehigh Valley.
