Colts receiver shares huge prediction about team’s offense
Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. isn’t lacking confidence with second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson and star running back Jonathan Taylor on track to open the upcoming regular season in the lineup together.
“I think we could have the best RPO [run-pass option] game in the whole NFL,” Pittman said during organized team activities, as Stephen Holder of ESPN shared on Monday. “We went to the RPO a lot last year, and just being able to add Anthony’s legs, I mean, he can add in a whole other aspect which is you can’t really load up that box. He can pull it and throw it. You can’t really [concentrate] most of the defense towards J.T.”
Taylor, who led the NFL with 1,811 rushing yards and 18 scores on the ground for the 2021 season, missed the first four games of this past campaign before he received a three-year, $42M contract extension that included $26.5M guaranteed. As for Richardson, the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft suffered what became a campaign-ending shoulder injury during Taylor’s regular-season debut last fall.
Much has been made about Richardson’s playing style considering he went down with a concussion in Week 2 last September before he hurt his shoulder. He recently suggested that head coach Shane Steichen is open to hearing ideas from players regarding offensive schemes that may or may not involve the 22-year-old signal-caller making plays with his legs.
“We just toss ideas around,” Richardson explained, per Holder. “[Steichen] asks me how I feel about certain things, and, then if I see certain things on the internet, like if I see a sweep or an option play or something like that, I’ll say ‘Hey, that’s kind of nice.’ I’ll show it to him and he’ll be like, ‘OK, we might be able to throw that in.’ It’s amazing to have a coach like that because we get to use our offense and use our weapons.”
As of Monday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Indianapolis’ over/under win total for the 2024 season at 8.5. Steichen and company hope Taylor and others will help Richardson stay healthy en route to the 2024 Colts reaching double-digit victories by the end of Week 18.
