Giants finally finds answer at the WR position as Clayton hold out of contract extension

This could be an underrated pick-up for Big Blue

Since Odell Beckham Jr. was dealt to the Cleveland Browns in 2019, the NY Giants have yet to find an answer at the wide receiver position. The failed signing of Kenny Golladay and less-than-ideal draft picks like Kadarius Toney have been held over the head of Big Blue for the past few seasons. General manager Joe Schoen addressed this issue by taking LSU standout Malik Nabers with the NFL Draft’s No. 6 overall pick.

 

Nabers should receive the highest target rate in the WRs room the second he steps into MetLife Stadium. However, NY will still have to distribute the ball to several players with the team’s newest star receiving the bulk of attention from opposing defenses. In a new piece from Draft Network writer Justin Melo, he thinks Tennessee Titans WR Treylon Burks would make sense for Brian Daboll. You know what, we agree.

Treylon Burks would be low-risk, high-reward addition to NY Giants

“Head coach Brian Daboll hired several assistants who are familiar with Burks this offseason. Burks’ 2023 offensive coordinator was Tim Kelly, who is now the Giants’ tight ends coach. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen also made a lateral move. If Kelly and Bowen have glowing things to say about Burks’ talent and/or work ethic, the Giants would have little to lose by allowing him to rehabilitate his career.”

Burks would be an intriguing option for the Giants. The former Arkansas WR was taken with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2022 draft, but has not blossomed into the player Tennessee thought he would be. He caught 16 balls for 221 yards in 11 games last season without a touchdown, fighting through several injuries.

NY might need to add another receiver if Darius Slayton continues to hold out for a contract extension. The longtime Giants WR was absent from the team’s voluntary offseason program as he looks to land a long-term deal. The holdout might not last to the regular season, but it is also possible that NY will go in a different direction and look to replace him with someone like Burks.

 

While Slayton has led NY in receiving in four of the last five seasons, Giants fans know he is not a true WR1. He has struggled with drops in the past and is not consistent enough to be the top target for QB Daniel Jones, which is why the front office was insistent on taking Nabers.

There are still several aspects of Burks’ game that he must improve upon, especially his durability. However, he was one of the top WRs in his draft class for a reason and offers massive potential. He could be an under-the-radar addition for the G-Men if they move on from Slayton in the near future.
