‘They deserve to be here’: Ex-Sheffield Wednesday man urges club not to release two ‘good players’

Former Sheffield Wednesday man Daniel Pudil has picked two out of contract Owls players who he thinks ‘deserve’ to stay.

Sheffield Wednesday have a number of players out of contract in the summer, including some big first-team players.

Josh Windass is among those and the striker recently revealed that his agent is in talks with Sheffield Wednesday, but that he and many of his teammates may wait until the future of Danny Rohl is finalised.

It’s been reported that Rohl has held positive talks with owner Dejphon Chansiri regarding his future at the club, with talks of a potential new contract for the German coach.

Elsewhere, after the 2-0 win vs Sunderland on the final day of the season, Barry Bannan all but confirmed him being at the club for at least one more year.

Daniel Pudil wants new contracts for Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer

Former Wednesday defender Pudil featured in a Sheffield Wednesday charity match recently, and he gave his thoughts on the contract situation at Hillsborough.

Speaking to The Star, Pudil said: “I was chatting to Gary Hooper about it, that Baz [Bannan] has been here nearly 10 years now – because he came around the same time as us in 2015.

And obviously Liam [Palmer] has been brought up from the academy. Those players deserve, for me, to get a new contract, and I would really like to see them again in a Sheffield Wednesday shirt.”

Pudil added: “What they have done for the club, they’ve been there in good times and bad times, so I do think they deserve to be here, and with Baz and Liam I know them very well – they’re not just good players, but good characters as well.”

Change needed at Sheffield Wednesday but one thing needs to remain

Sheffield Wednesday are undoubtedly heading towards a huge summer of change in terms of their playing squad.

Whilst there’s expected changes in terms of the facilities and Rohl’s contract and so on, there’ll be mass changes to the side if Rohl stays on, with the first-team in need of a makeover after years of patching over issues and players coming and going.

One thing has remained the same though, and needs to remain the same; having players in the side like Bannan and Palmer who are not only quality players, but who are very much ‘Sheffield Wednesday players’.

Like Pudil suggests, both players love the club and will always give their all. They’ll help to ensure that new players coming in know exactly what the club is all about and what’s needed to be loved by the supporters.

No matter how much a team is in transition, there always needs to be that sense of stability, and Sheffield Wednesday can maintain theirs by keeping the likes of Bannan, Palmer, and Windass too.

There’s others who may come into the conversation, but those three seem like key contract deals for the club to sort out sooner rather than later.
