Philadelphia Eagles 2024 Defensive Goal is About Collective Competency

The Eagles exited the NFL’s three-day draft weekend with a physical and athletic class of nine players who’ll quickly fit into the ‘Gold Standard’ way of doing business.

Philadelphia made nine of the draft’s 257 picks. Howie Roseman retooled their secondary after landing Toledo All-American cornerback Quinyon Mitchell and Iowa star safety Cooper DeJean with their first two picks.

The Eagles’ GM added an intriguing pass rusher in Jalyx Hunt while landing a legacy pick and professional linebacker in Jeremiah Trotter Jr.

With the rookie minicamp now over, we’re looking at stats and facts about all nine picks.

Toledo DB Quinyon Mitchell (No. 22 overall)

Two-year dominance:

Mitchell dominated his final two seasons at Toledo and earned All-American honors twice.

2022 –Second-team All-American; First-Team All-MAC; led FBS in passes defended; led MAC in INTs; 2 pick sixes.

2023 –Second Team All-American; First Team All-MAC; Led MAC in passes def.;

Iowa DB Cooper DeJean (No. 40)

During DeJean’s final season, he earned First Team All-Big Ten honors at two positions (DB and PR); DeJean was the Big Ten DB of Year and Big Ten PR of Year, all while missing the final four games (right leg).

DeJean only allowed only one catch of 15-plus yards in 2023).

Houston Christian LB Jalyx Hunt (No. 94)

A late bloomer, Hunt departed high school as a 195-pound safety who enrolled at Ivy League Cornell before adding weight and moving to linebacker in 2022 following his transfer to Houston Christian. During his two years in the program, at a new position, Hunt led the team in sacks both seasons (No. 2 in school history in career sacks) and was named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.

Clemson RB Will Shipley (No. 127)

In high school, Shipley was an all-around athlete. As a sophomore, he lettered in baseball and indoor track and won the Charlotte Championship in the 55 meters (6.36 seconds). He also had personal bests of 35.95 seconds in the 300 meters and 20 feet, 2 inches in the long jump.

Texas A&M WR Ainias Smith (No. 152)

A five-year starter at Texas A&M, Smith was an all-purpose weapon (2023 snaps:
69.8 percent slot, 26.1 percent outside, and 4.1 percent backfield), becoming the only 2,000-yard receiver in SEC history to also collect at least 250 yards on rush
attempts, punt returns, and kickoff returns.

Clemson LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr. (No. 155)

In 2023, Trotter earned Second Team All-American and Second Team All-ACC honors and  Led the team in tackles, TFL, and sacks. Trotter started all 12 games for Clemson, logging 88 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks.

Michigan OG Trevor Keegan (No. 172)

While at Michigan, Keeagn appeared in 44 games and had 37 career starts at left guard. Keegan was a three-time All-Big Ten selection, and in 2023, his teammates voted him captain. Keegan helped Michigan win the Joe Moore Award during back-to-back seasons, and According to PFF, Keegan was in for 382 Pass Block snaps and didn’t give up a single sack.
