Alan Shearer has now shared who he thinks has been the stand out player at Newcastle United this season.
Newcastle have endured a difficult season with injuries and disappointing exits from the Champions League and Carabao Cup, but Shearer thinks there’s someone who has stood out despite all that.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former Newcastle man claimed that Anthony Gordon has been the highlight of the season for the Geordies.
Shearer says Newcastle star has been ‘absolutely fantastic’
It’s hard not to be a fan of Gordon after the huge improvements he’s made this season in terms of both the numbers he’s putting up and the determination he has at both ends of the pitch.
Eddie Howe always knew he was a hard worker, that’s exactly why he signed him from Everton in the first place, but it was his lack of end product in the final third which is why the move was questioned by many.
“In a season that’s been tough at times, he’s the one player who I think has stood out. His energy, ability to run with the ball, he’s got goals.”
However, the £45m signing has proved all of his doubters wrong by enjoying a brilliant season in which he has now recorded 17 goal contributions across all competitions.
Shearer has been really impressed with what he’s seen from the attacker, claiming that Gordon has been Newcastle’s player of the season when things haven’t necessarily been going their way.
On Gordon, Shearer said: “I think he’s sending a huge message to Gareth Southgate. He’s been absolutely fantastic.
Newcastle have England’s future star on their hands
There’s a chance that Gareth Southgate does not include Gordon in his upcoming England squad for the Euros despite him being in the best form out of the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish or Raheem Sterling.
However, even if the 22-year-old doesn’t make it to Germany that should only be added motivation for him to use next season and make sure that he gives them no choice but to select him at the very next opportunity.
Gordon can offer something England don’t really have at the moment, a player who is willing to not only run at players head on, but also to have that same determination at the other end of the pitch helping out his defenders.
Shearer himself is a big advocate for the Newcastle attacker to be on the plan in a few months time, but ultimately we all know how Southgate usually makes these decisions.
