‘Honestly’ – Popular pundits say Rangers have one ‘top-class’ player in their ranks

Rangers stay top of the Scottish Premiership table despite losing 2-1 against Motherwell at Ibrox on Saturday.

The Gers were trailing by eight points from Celtic at one point and did a terrific job to move ahead of the Hoops under Philippe Clement.

There have been some brilliant individual performances this season from the Bears. While James Tavernier has been getting plaudits recently for yet another outstanding season, others have equally stepped up this season.

Graeme Souness has showered praise on Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland, saying the 30-year-old has been “top-class”. The talkSPORT pundit says that Butland should be in the England squad for the Euros.

Jordan Pickford is the first-choice goalkeeper for Gareth Southgate, and Butland should be his deputy if the England boss picks the team based on merit. Aaron Ramsdale has hardly played this season, and he must trust the Rangers goalkeeper as a reliable option.

What Souness said about the Gers goalkeeper

“Jack is a top goalkeeper and I think – because I live in England and I watch more English games than Scottish games – he should be in the mix for going to the Euros,” said Souness, as quoted by the Daily Record (page 46).

“He is every bit as good as any England goalkeeper that is out there at the moment, if not better.

“Pickford is in the box seat so it’s his shirt for the moment. But Jack is a top-class performer.

“Well, Rangers should be jumping up and down that they have a goalkeeper of his quality because I really believe that he should be in the England mix. He is a top goalkeeper.”

Rangers must stay focussed

Butland has made 29 appearances this season for the Gers and he has been absolutely fantastic for them. He has conceded only 16 goals this season, and has registered as many as 17 clean sheets, that shows what a terrific performer he is.

Based on the performance alone, Butland deserves a spot in the Euro squad, but there are other worthy candidates as well.

Rangers were fortunate that Celtic failed to capitalise on their slip-up, but they cannot let that happen again. Celtic are still favourites to win the league, mainly because of the experience they have, but the Gers shouldn’t pay heed to such talks.

In the previous game, the Gers were sloppy at the back, and they must cut out such individual errors as we move into the business end of the season.
