Rangers: Sky Sports reporter shares next Lawrence Shankland step as Hearts contract offer declined
Rangers remain interested in signing Lawrence Shankland after the striker rejected a new contract from Hearts, according to Mark Benstead.
The reporter shared the update on Shankland’s future live on Sky Sports News from outside Tynecastle on Monday [22 January, 10:39am].
Rangers have been strongly linked with the Scotland international, who is due to become a free agent at the end of next season.
Benstead said: “It’s our understanding that there’s an interest in the player from Rangers.
“Hearts have put a new contract towards Lawrence Shankland, but from what I’ve been told, he will not be signing that in its current form.”
Good news
The fact Shankland has supposedly rejected this initial contract offer from Hearts can only be a positive development from Rangers’ perspective.
Should the 28-year-old put pen to paper, that would mean the Gers having to splash out a lot more for the player than they otherwise would.
As things stand, with Shankland out of contract in 18 months’ time, Hearts will surely be tempted to cash in now while they can land a sizable fee.
rangers
Rangers are after a striker who is ready to hit the ground running, and in Shankland they can sign a player who knows how to find the net.
A fee of anywhere between £3million and £5m has been mentioned, and somewhere in between could be good business for everyone involved.
Hearts would much rather keep hold of Shankland, of course, but if the player wants to further his career, Ibrox is the perfect step for him.
This interest may well disappear come the summer, so it could well be a case of now or never if Shankland is to get that move.
