Shay Given has now suggested that one Newcastle United player could be sold to raise funds for the January window, but fans aren’t going to like it.
Newcastle are very limited as to what they can do in January thanks to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, so they may have to find a way around it.
Speaking on The Monday Night Club, Given suggested that, while fans won’t want to hear this, Lewis Miley could be sold to bring in pure profit for Newcastle to spend in January or the summer.
Given says Newcastle can get up to £40m for Miley
Miley has emerged as a brilliant talent for Newcastle this season in what has been a tough time for the squad with the number of injuries they’ve picked up, particularly in midfield.
Rather than battling hard for 90 minutes in some tough defeats, Miley really should be playing in the final moments of an easy victory to aid his development, but nothing seems to phase him.
Eddie Howe has been blow away by how good the teenager has been this season, describing him as ‘incredible’, but he won’t want to depart with him just yet as he looks like he could be a top talent for the future.
Though he acknowledged that it won’t be a popular suggestion, Given proposed the idea of selling Miley for pure profit as he is an academy player rather than one of Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak or Sven Botman which has been suggested.
On the show, Given said: “You look at Lewis Miley at Newcastle. They could sell him for £30 or £40 million now because he hasn’t cost anything but that is the last thing that Newcastle fans would want because he came through the academy, loves the football club.
“But they balance books and spend money in a different position, they would sell one of their prized assets for the future.”
Miley is the future of Newcastle
You can never overestimate how important it is to have players in your squad who are not just talented footballers but who understand what it means to play for the team in front of the fans.
Newcastle have got exactly that in Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, Elliot Anderson, Paul Dummett and Jacob Murphy, but it is Miley who looks like he could develop into a player head and shoulders above the rest and be a key man for the team for years to come.
It’s strange to think about but in a decade’s time Miley will only really be entering his prime, so to be this good at such an early stage of his career is unbelievable and very exciting for supporters.
The last thing they want to do now is sell while he’s still got a lot to prove. Yes, you could get a decent fee for someone who cost you nothing, but in a few years, if you’re still looking to sell, he could even be worth double that.
