Popular defensive lineman reveals the major reason why he joined Auburn

After committing to Florida in June, Clinton 4-star defensive lineman Amaris Williams signed with Auburn on National Signing Day.

Clinton High School’s Amaris Williams made news on National Signing Day, as he flipped his commitment from Florida to Auburn.

A four-star prospect according to all major recruiting websites, Williams is a 6-foot-3, 265-pound defensive lineman.

247Sports.com ranks Williams as the No. 1 player in North Carolina from the Class of 2024 and the No. 34 player nationally. The website also ranks him as the No. 8 defensive lineman in the country.

Williams committed to Florida on June 17, one day after arriving for his official visit.

In October, Ohio State extended an offer to Williams. Shortly thereafter, he took an official visit to the Buckeyes. Speculation grew that he may flip to Ohio State, but Auburn was also on the table.

According to MaxPreps, Williams recorded 34 total tackles, including 20 tackles for loss and 11 sacks in 11 games this fall, although some games may be missing from the totals on MaxPreps. In that same time period, he is credited with 679 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 39 carries. He also had one receiving touchdown.

Williams led Clinton to a runner-up finish in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A state championship game.

In addition to Auburn, Florida, and Ohio State, Williams received offers from Appalachian State, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Florida A&M, Georgia, James Madison, Liberty, NC State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Old Dominion, Penn State, Tennessee, USC, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia.
