Latest report suggests Bears will retain him for 2024

CHICAGO, Ill., — The Chicago Bears could run things back in 2024 with a strong finish to this season. On Saturday night ahead of the Bears Week 17 matchup against Atlanta, NFL insider Ian Rapoport dropped some news regarding the future of the franchise and a big decision for 2024.

Rapoport is reporting that he would be shocked if Matt Eberflus wasn’t back next season as the head coach.

“I would be surprised if Matt Eberflus was not back for the Chicago Bears,” Rapoport said on NFL Network. “They have looked much better. He’s been calling the defense, that has been impressive. They have won four of the last six, six out of the last 11. Certainly seem to be headed in the right direction. I hear nothing but positive vibes in Chicago.”

The Bears started the year 0-4 with embarrassing losses to Green Bay and Kansas City, then blowing a big fourth-quarter lead to Denver. But Chicago started to figure some things out, specifically on the defensive side. As Eberflus took over playcalling duties and the team traded for Montez Sweat, that defense has been one of the better units in the NFL over the past six or so weeks.

Chicago has also won four of six games and stayed in the playoff race until at least Week 17. There are two games left this season and two losses, or looking bad against Green Bay for the second time this year could change things. But for now, the vibe feels like Eberflus will be here and the changes could come on the offensive side.

CHICAGO, Ill., — The Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons will meet in Week 17 at Soldier Field for the home finale for the Bears in the 2023 season.  Chicago is coming off a win over Arizona last week and has some very slim playoff hopes still alive. However, the Bears will need to win out and have a few other teams lose out to have a shot.

Meanwhile, the Falcons are fresh off a win over Indianapolis and are right in the NFC South and Wildcard race for the playoffs. A win would go a long way for both teams, while a loss would pretty much end their seasons.

For Chicago, they have been playing a lot better as of late, winning four of their last six games and the two losses saw them blow a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. If not for those losses, they would be holding a playoff spot going into this week. This is another game for the Bears to go out and prove that they are on the right track in this rebuild and it could have a big impact on some decisions looming for the future including at quarterback and head coach.

With just two games left on the year, we are heading towards a very interesting offseason. But before we get there, we have to finish off these next two weeks. Let’s look at our staff predictions for the Week 17 matchup between the Bears and Falcons at Soldier Field.

ANDREW FREEMAN

Prediction: Falcons 20, Bears 16

Record: 10-5

This shapes up to be an old school slugfest featuring two good defenses. The Falcons match up well against the Bears’ offense with a stout run defense led by an improved defensive line. On the other side, however, the Bears have made a habit of feasting on bad quarterbacks and will have opportunities against Taylor Heineke. Ultimately, I think the Falcons are better built to withstand lower scoring affairs like this game bodes to be.

X-Factor: Justin Fields. With a lot of factors still up in the air heading into the offseason, this could be Fields’ last home game as a Bear. Fields could do a lot for his case to stay by playing well against a good defense, something he’s struggled with in his career.

ZACK PEARSON

Prediction: Bears 20, Falcons 16

Record: 10-5

This will be the home finale for the Chicago Bears in the 2023 season and potentially the last home game for quarterback Justin Fields depending on what the team decides to do this offseason. I think Chicago will continue to play good football and take down the Falcons who are still battling for a playoff spot.

X-Factor: Pass rush. The Bears pass rush has been a lot better all-around since they acquired Montez Sweat. I think that will continue on Sunday against the Falcons and could be a big difference in this game.

USAYD KOSHUL

Prediction: Bears 24, Falcons 17

Record: 7-8

The Bears are at home against a struggling Falcons team but Atlanta has still remained in the playoff hunt, especially with everyone in the building having uncertain futures. Ultimately, given the fact that Chicago is 4-2 in the last six games, this game is very winnable.

X-Factor: Justin Fields. He’s playing for his career in Chicago at this point so let’s see if he can have a strong showing.

AARON LEMING

Prediction: Bears 20, Falcons 17

Record: 7-8

This is a matchup of two very similarly built teams. Chicago has the better defense but I’d argue Atlanta has more offensive talent. How this game plays out is anyone’s best guess but this has been a game I’ve had down as a Bears win for a while. Much like Chicago, it’s all a matter of which Falcons team shows up each Sunday. They lost to the Carolina Panthers by a 9-7 score but followed that up with a dominating 29-10 victory over a good Indianapolis Colts team last Sunday. Chicago is favored by three at home but I’d absolutely call this one a toss up.

X-Factor: Stopping the Atlanta Rushing Attack. Back in April, Atlanta spent the No. 8 overall pick on running back Bijan Robinson. They’ve proceeded to use him sparingly but it does seem like they are learning to lean on their rushing attack more. Especially with their constant problems at quarterback. Making this Atlanta offense one-dimensional will be a big key for this defense and for my money, the key to the game. I expect a defensive battle overall.

BOBBY WALKER

Prediction: Bears 23, Falcons 20

Record: 7-8

This Falcons team is hard to read. On one hand, they put up only one touchdown against the then one-win Panthers in a 7-9 loss two weeks ago. But last week, they trounced the redhot aColts 29-10 at home on the backs of a strong ground game led by BIJAN Robinson and Tyler Allgeier. They seem worse on the road, which is why I like Chicago by a score at Soldier Field. Defensively, the Falcons may struggle to run against the likes of Sweat on the front four and a strong secondary halting Heinicke through the air. On offense, Fields should find success if they stick to last week’s script that included run plays involving Fields and establishing early connections with Moore and Kmet.

X-factor: Justin Fields. The offense runs through him (literally and figuratively). These last two games are his audition tape to stay under center in Chicago going forward.

BETH MISHLER-ELMORE

Prediction: Bears 21, Falcons 20

Record: 7-8

This should be a close, low-scoring game with some ugly plays for us to watch just before we ring in the new year. I think ultimately, the difference will be whether Chicago’s offense can compensate for what will likely be the absence of Cole Kmet and Darnell Mooney, both of whom didn’t practice at all this week. Can Justin Fields do enough against a Falcons ‘D’ that’s ranked 6th in the NFL in points per game (19.2)? If Fields can’t do it himself, maybe he can get the Bears in position for Cairo Santos to do the rest.
