Rangers have fended off several clubs across Europe in order to sign Wolves’ Fabio Silva on loan, according to Daily Record.
The online news outlet reported [29 December] that Union Berlin, Wolfsburg, Borussia Monchengladbach, Genoa and Monza were all interested in the young forward, who was bought by Wolves in 2020 for a club-record fee.
It is also understood that Old Firm rivals Celtic were planning on a move for the Portuguese man but Rangers pipped them to the signing, with the loan deal taking effect on 1 January.
Despite heavy interest from the Hoops, Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen were vital in making the move happen, with Rangers said to agree to a five-figure fee towards his weekly wage.
Transfer excitement before window opens
Silva could be an extremely important signing come the second half of the season at Ibrox. As well as continuing their challenge for the Scottish Premiership title, the Gers still have the Europa League competition to battle in and will be hoping to bring both trophies back to Scotland.
The Wolves man is primarily a left-winger. With Abdallah Sima potentially away from the club for a month due to the 2023 African Cup of Nations, Silva could be the perfect short-term solution until the end of the season.
His career has never hit the heights that were expected when Wolves splashed the cash in September 2020. However, the talent is still evident following two six-month loans last season with Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven.
The forward scored 11 goals in 32 appearances for the former club, before scoring five goals and assisting two more in 19 appearances in the Netherlands.
Skill and talent is not the issue for Silva’s poor return at Wolves, scoring just five goals in 72 matches. With Matheus Cunha, Hee-Chan Hwang and Pedro Neto all above him in the pecking order, the player’s confidence must be shot.
Hopefully, for all parties involved, the 21-year-old benefits from this specific loan spell in Scotland.
