Newcastle United news with Eddie Howe’s tactics questioned and John Carver asked to return

John Carver has been asked to return to St James’ Park twice

John Carver has revealed he was asked to stay on at Newcastle United in 2015 following his spell as caretaker manager, and has since been offered the chance to return to the coaching staff at St James’ Park on a couple of occasions.

Now on the international scene with Scotland, Carver has previously had spells at Newcastle as a youth player, youth coach, and assistant to Ruud Gullit, Sir Bobby Robson and Alan Pardew, experiencing cup finals and Europe along the way.Rightly or wrongly, the spell that he’ll be mostly remembered for was as a temporary boss nine years ago, which saw Newcastle slide into a relegation dogfight before surviving on the final day of the season.

Eddie Howe responds to pressure talk as pundit questions decisions

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe insists he is dealing with plenty of emotions after a disastrous December piled sudden pressure on the Magpies boss. A shock 3-1 reversal to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day added to a miserable month that featured two cup exits and defeats to Luton, Everton, Tottenham, AC Milan and Chelsea.

“Whenever you lose games it is an uncomfortable feeling when your team is not at its peak,” he told reporters. “Concerned? You deal with a lot of emotions when you don’t get the result you want. I am feeling that.”

Danny Murphy was among those who questioned Howe over his decisions against Nottingham Forest, with Anthony Elanga causing havoc down their right hand side by consistently exposing the space behind Dan Burn.

Nottingham Forest forward Chris Wood admits Newcastle United will ‘stay in his heart’ for a long time after his short spell on Tyneside.

The striker spent 12 months under Eddie Howe before leaving the club for Nottingham Forest in January but was back at St James’ Park, and with a bang, on Boxing Day as he scored three goals to give Nuno Espirito Santo’s side their first away win since early September.
