Newcastle plan to sell 29-yr-old in Jan – he only signed new deal last year

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are open to bids for Emil Krafth in January if a new center-back is secured.

The Magpies are said to be eager to part ways with the 29-year-old defender next month if a reasonable offer is received.

Krafth signed a new contract at St James’ Park in the summer of 2022 that runs until 2024, but Newcastle are willing to let him go due to his position in Eddie Howe’s pecking order.

Krafth has only played 137 minutes of first-team football for Newcastle this season, with only two minutes of that time spent in the Premier League.

He came on as a late substitute in Newcastle’s 3-0 loss to Everton on Thursday night, and he also came on in the last minutes of Newcastle’s 2-0 loss to Bournemouth in November.

Newcastle are anxious to get Krafth off the payroll as quickly as possible, but their present injury issue means they are hesitant to let him go without a replacement.

Newcastle’s primary objective in January, according to Football Insider on Friday (8 December), is to sign a new centre-back.

If Newcastle can recruit a new defender, the club will step up their efforts to offload Krafth before his contract ends next summer.

With Sven Botman out for an extended period of time due to a knee injury, Howe has depended on Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles as his central defensive partnership.

However, with a crowded winter calendar likely to inflict additional injuries on Newcastle’s roster, Howe wants to maintain Krafth as a reserve defender at least until Botman’s comeback.

In other news, Newcastle expects to finalize a deal for Fabian Schar after receiving the go-ahead.
