Erik ten Hag gives spiky Newcastle response as Manchester United boss hits out at ‘everyone’

Newcastle United limited Manchester United to just one chance on goal in the Magpies’ 1-0 triumph last week, and Erik ten Hag was not pleased to be reminded of that result following his team’s success against Chelsea.

Erik ten Hag has slammed ‘everyone talking’ about Manchester United’s performance against Newcastle.

Last week, Anthony Gordon scored the only goal in Newcastle’s 1-0 triumph over Manchester United, on a night when the Magpies confined the visitors to just one shot on goal at St James’ Park. Manchester United bounced back from that defeat with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea, but ten Hag bristled when commentator Gabby Logan told him that his team’s much-improved performance was in stark contrast to their performance the previous weekend.

“Every time we’re talking about Newcastle,” Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho told Amazon Prime Video Sport. “Last week, we played three games.” We had two very good games and one awful one, and everyone is talking about the negative one.”

It’s worth mentioning that Newcastle were already without 11 players against Manchester United before losing Nick Pope late in the game, and Eddie Howe ended up making just one unforced substitute in stoppage time due to a lack of choices in reserve. Newcastle were also playing their third game in a week after heavyweight matches with PSG and Chelsea, but ten Hag instead referred to Manchester United’s schedule after his club played Everton and Galatasaray on the road before coming to Tyneside.

“I can give always reasons, but they are never excuses,” he went on to say. “You keep bringing up that performance, but we played three games in that week, two of which were very good.”

“We played on Sunday, and Newcastle played on Saturday.” We competed on Wednesday, whereas others competed on Tuesday. We returned from Istanbul. We had to leave. There are always reasons why, but that is no excuse for us to play the way we did in Newcastle. Certainly not.”
