‘Probably was’ – Eddie Howe gives honest verdict on Anthony Gordon’s performance on Everton return

Everton defeated Newcastle United 3-0 at Goodison Park.

Anthony Gordon’s last trip to Everton ended in disaster, according to Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe.

Gordon progressed through the Goodison Park youth and made 78 appearances for the Toffees. However, he was transferred to Newcastle for up to £45 million in January 2022, casting a shadow over his departure. Last season, the attacker came on as a late substitute in the Magpies’ 4-1 triumph at L4.

He’s subsequently established himself as a crucial player at St James’ Park, scoring six goals and recording five assists in 13 Premier League outings this season before returning to L4. Gordon, on the other hand, had little impact as Everton won 3-0 to climb out of the relegation zone. He had one chance while the game was scoreless after taking possession from James Tarkowski, but he lacked poise and shot into the arms of Blues goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Gordon, according to Howe, went too far in his attempt to impress against his former club. When questioned if Gordon was trying too hard after the game, Newcastle manager Steve Bruce responded, “That’s a fair reflection.” Anthony’s return here is a watershed event for him. He had some huge plays throughout the game, particularly in the second half. It wasn’t for a lack of trying; in fact, he was probably the reverse. But he’s been fantastic for us in recent weeks, and he’s got a big role to play for us in the coming weeks.”

Everton had numerous chances in the first half but couldn’t convert them – a recurring theme at Goodison Park this season. However, Dwight McNeil scored the opening goal for the Toffees in the 79th minute, before Abdoulaye Doucoure and Beto scored to secure all three points.

Howe admitted that McNeil’s involvement was critical. “The game was there for us to win in the second half after an even first half,” he continued. We didn’t play very well, in my opinion.

“I thought we had them pinned down until we conceded the first goal, which changed the momentum.” It was a disappointing evening and a squandered opportunity. It’s difficult for us to comprehend. Last year, our away record was excellent, and we were scoring freely. Apart from the Sheffield United game (an 8-0 triumph), we haven’t had much success on the road this season.”
