The Newcastle United forward was asked about the two goalkeepers and a possible move to St James’ Park.
Newcastle United is the ‘club to be at’ right now, and there will be plenty of ‘appetite’ for players to join them in the January transfer window.
That is the opinion of Magpies forward Callum Wilson, who believes Aaron Ramsdale and David De Gea would be interested in joining United next month.
Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope is expected to be out for four months due to a shoulder injury suffered in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Manchester United.
As such, Eddie Howe’s side have been linked with a move for former Red Devils goalkeeper De Gea, who is available on a free transfer, and England international goalkeeper Ramsdale, who has lost his place in the Arsenal side to David Raya.
When asked if he thinks Newcastle will make a play for either goalkeeper next month, Wilson says he wouldn’t be shocked if they did.
“I’m sure everyone wants to come to Newcastle right now because everything is going off on Tyneside,” Wilson remarked on the Footballers’ Football podcast.
“This is the place to be.” We play fantastic football, are in the Champions League, and will be competitive again this season. We have a quarter-final match against Sunderland in January. There is a lot of interest from those who wish to come and join us.”
However, when asked about the potential of bringing in a new goalkeeper next month, Howe says he is willing to give deputy goalie Martin Dubravka a chance.
“I’ve seen a lot of media headlines regarding goalkeepers and other players,” Howe said at a press conference on Wednesday morning.
“We have made no inquiries.” We’d be recruiting in every section of the pitch if we started now. It’s an opportunity for the other keepers to solidify their positions. We have complete faith in Martin. Martin is a high-level goalkeeper with excellent footwork and distribution.”
