Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Aaron Ramsdale this week, but Callum Wilson admires another Arsenal player.
Callum Wilson of Newcastle United has spoken about his toughest rival in the Premier League, although he admits he’d love to play alongside the Arsenal star.
Following the devastating injury to first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope, the Magpies have been linked with a move for out-of-favour Gunners shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale, although Wilson would like to sign one of Mikel Arteta’s centre-backs.
Wilson and West Ham United co-host Michail Antonio were asked about the top-flight players that get under their skin the most on the BBC Sounds’ Footballer’s Football Podcast. Wilson chose former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi, while the Hammers man chose Gabriel.
“My name is Gabriel from Arsenal,” he explained. He’s a good player, and off the field, he’s probably a great man, like me, and we’d get along fine. It’s battle on the pitch; he wants to fight me, and I want to fight him.
“We recently played Arsenal, he was kicking me, I was clotheslining him, nudging him, elbowing him, standing on his foot, I fell over and just grabbed him for no reason and just pulled him down with me.” ‘What are you doing?’ he said. “I told him to stop talking.”
Newcastle and Arsenal met at St James’ Park in early November this season, with the 1-0 triumph highlighted by a VAR disagreement over Anthony Gordon’s goal. In recent seasons, the two clubs have had tense clashes, most notably a 2-0 Magpies victory at St James’ Park in the last month of the season in May 2022.
“It started from the last game before the one this season, we must’ve had that little bit on the pitch and you shake hands afterwards and get on with it,” Wilson stated. He was really comical in the tunnel for the game this season because he was smiling at the Brazilians and laughing, and I was already irritated. He’s smiling, looks at me and then just thinks, ‘Oh no, I smiled at the wrong person’. He gave me the ‘Oh, not you again’ expression.
“We got on the pitch and began.” I asked Ramsdale about him and what he was like, and he replied he was a great person. I’d probably get along with him off the field, but on it, we just clash. You’d want someone like that on your squad if he was on the same team as you. At the end of the day, you don’t want your center half to be bullied. It’s all about love.”
