Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens acknowledges that the forthcoming FA Cup clash between his team and Carlisle United lacks the typical romanticism associated with the competition. The first-round fixture, taking place at Brisbane Road, involves two League One teams with a recent history of encounters.
Wellens characterizes it as a “challenging draw” for both sides, given their familiarity with each other, and suggests that it doesn’t carry the enchantment often associated with first-round matches. He notes that during the draw, many non-league teams were available, and the hope was to face an uncommon opponent for a more unique experience for the fans.
“It’s a demanding challenge for us and for them. Our primary focus is to win the game and progress to the second round to face a different opponent,” Wellens explains. He expresses that when teams from the same league are drawn against each other, it doesn’t generate as much excitement among fans.
Despite the tough draw, Wellens emphasizes that his team is looking forward to the game. He mentions that Orient recently won 1-0 at Carlisle’s Brunton Park but anticipates having to make tactical adjustments this weekend due to several injured players on his team.
“We’ve played against Carlisle very recently. However, the challenge is that they might have different players in their lineup, while we have several injuries at the moment,” Wellens states. He mentions specific absences like Jordan Graham and Rob Hunt, indicating that they might need to change their playing system, especially since Shaq Forde is suspended for an upcoming match.
In conclusion, Wellens believes that neither his team nor Carlisle will surprise each other, as their recent encounters have made them well-acquainted with each other’s strengths and strategies.
